BALIKESİR / ISTANBUL – Esan, a subsidiary of the Eczacıbaşı Group and a cornerstone of Türkiye’s mining industry, is spearheading a transformative shift toward high-tech, sustainable metal production. By prioritizing hydrometallurgical processes at its Balya operations in Balıkesir—home to the country’s deepest underground metallic mine—Esan is transitioning from a traditional raw ore exporter to a producer of high-value "end products" (metal ingots).
This strategic move is set to redefine Türkiye's role in the global mineral supply chain, particularly for critical metals like zinc and lead.
Breaking the Import Dependency
Türkiye has historically been a significant consumer of zinc, yet much of the demand is met through imports. While the country possesses rich mineral deposits, a lack of advanced smelting and refining infrastructure meant that ore was often exported as "concentrate" (semi-processed).
Esan’s investment in hydrometallurgy—a process that uses aqueous chemistry for the recovery of metals from ores and concentrates—allows the company to process these materials domestically. The result is 99.99% pure zinc ingots, providing a critical domestic supply for the galvanizing, automotive, and construction sectors.
A $50 Million Boost for "Green Mining"
The global significance of this project was recently validated by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In a major financing deal, the EBRD provided a $50 million loan to Esan to support its "Green Mining" transition.
Key pillars of the investment include:
- Waste-to-Value Strategy: Utilizing hydrometallurgical leaching to extract zinc from low-grade materials and tailings that were previously considered "waste."
- Decarbonization: Electrification of mine equipment and energy efficiency upgrades to reduce the carbon footprint of the Balya site.
- Circular Economy: Implementing closed-loop water systems and minimizing chemical discharge, aligning with the EU Green Deal standards.
The Tech Behind the Transformation
Unlike traditional pyrometallurgy, which relies on high-heat smelting and results in higher atmospheric emissions, the hydrometallurgical route offers a cleaner alternative. The process involves:
- Leaching: Dissolving the metal into a solution.
- Purification: Removing impurities like iron or cadmium.
- Electrowinning: Using electric current to deposit pure metal onto cathodes.
This technological leap not only secures Türkiye's industrial supply chain but also positions Esan as a leader in sustainable mineral processing in the Mediterranean region.
